Join us at noon on January 19th at the AFS Cinema, Austin, TX
Last week the Austin Film Critics Association (AFCA) announced the winners of our 2024 Film Awards. Among their number was a special award, unique to our organization, for Best Austin Film. This year’s prize went to the Sing Sing andfilmmaker Greg Kwedar, and we’ve lined up a way to properly celebrate with a special screening on January 19th at 12:30pm.
The film, which also picked up a Best Actor award (for the masterful turn from Colman Domingo), Best Ensemble, and Best Adapted Screenplay (Greg Kwedar & Clint Bentley), is a stirring and emotionally resonant tale of incarcerated prisoners finding a voice and purpose through the performative arts. A potent drama, further elevated by its roots in reality and use of a cast playing the formerly incarcerated version of themselves.
This screening, graciously hosted by the AFS Cinema, marks a special opportunity to not only see the movie on the big screen, but with a special introduction by the AFCA, and a video introduction from the film’s writer/director Greg Kwedar.
We look forward to celebrating this exceptional film, and another wonderful year of cinema with you.
Purchase your tickets to the event here. AFS is Hosting Screenings all week with the AFCA Event on January 19th at 12:30pm.
Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men. When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy, in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.
